I'm not a dj by any means but I am a final year music student specialising in composition and technology. Just wondering does anyone here try to recreate their sound or anything similar. I'm in no way trying to copy their sound as I have my thesis planned out and it's no dance anthem but the seamless combination of so many sounds by the avalanches is so amazing to me that I need advice. So I guess I'm asking is there anyone out there who is flippin class as mixing like a devil and creating beautiful sounds...any tips?

well... I made my musical debut last year, and Avalanches was one of my main inspirations (as well as Cornelius, my bloody valentine and other old indiepop, and about a gazillion other stuff).

It's only available in Japan though, but you can listen to it in its entirety at this link: http://www.panachesounds.com/ryecd010.htm

The album's perhaps not 100% avalanches, more like Cornelius' "Fantasma" (which on one hand was an inspiration for The Avalanches) in my opinion.

Here is the band combo I've been wanting to Acheive:
Member 1: Piano / Keyboards / Oboe (me)
Member 2: Drumset / Percussian
Member 3: Turntable / Guitar or Trumpet or Sax
Member 4: Guitar / Bass / Trumpet or Sax

There ya go.
Id mainly use the Guitar/Drums/Piano/Tables mix.
But I have yet to find 3 or 4. Its tricky to find that here in Kentucky.

My band (The Pryor Theory) line-up is:

1. Drumkit/percussion
2. Sampler/Decks/Vocals
3. Laptop running Acid Pro 4.0 and Vegas 4.0

it's 50%live 50%pre-preprogrammed stuff (i.e basslines and synths)

Started in early 2005.. used to have two extra members for some early gigs: a guy on bass and another on vibraphones and djembe which was alot better for live improvisation and jamming. These days we play a much more structured, tighter set but with fewer opportunities to chop and change. At some future point we hope to have different members come and go and add their thing to what the two of us do. There are some mp3s and gig photos (2-man format) at www.pryortheory.com

Garage Band is best for mac, and one of the best out there from what I've heard.
I haven't gotten to use it yet.

i am in the process of recording an avalanches style concept cd, and looking for collaborators like me with vast eclectic samples and bargain bin samples

the project has to sound authentic as i plan to take the idea to a record label.

(i have had stuff released before - so this is not pie in the sky!)
