but, they did also re-release the J5 EP, as an extended version, J5 LP...

but then, the J5 LP came out after quality control (i think)...so that gets confusing...:)

i think it is a good album - less commercial than the first two records (i thought it went: the j5 e.p. > the j5 album > quality control) but is still worth checking out.

there's less harmonies and sing-along choruses, and the beats are more soulful (and...thoughful - still really good and err, fresh!) than the other releases - but the talent, i.e. the lyrics and the tight rhyming is still all there.

yeah the j5 lp was released over here in about 97/98 - i only saw the ep much later, quality control was released 2000 so i always consider that the second album sorry for any confusion!

i like 'em but can only really listen to them in small doses, there's something about their sound that starts to grate on me after a while.

yeah, the 'first album' i was referring to was the extended e.p. released in uk in 1998, i.e. with lesson 6, jayou, concrete schoolyard etc. rather than quality control.

ta for all your views - think i'll get it now! a live set is what i'm really after though. saw them at la2 (now mean fiddler) in london in 2000 and they were sooo good. :)

oh...was the J5 LP released before quality control?

i didnt really know...it must have been the re-release of the J5 EP that came out after quality control. cause i remember SOMETHING (either J5 EP or LP) was released, or re-released after quality control...i think...

Hey guys it was one of my mates who is the flute sample at the end of the 3rd song if you only knew...He busks by playing his flute over tracks.

He was busking outside the melbourne J5 gig and marc 7 i think came out and taped him with a mini disc recorder. Now he is on the album. Which is v.cool.

does anyone know if he is entitled to royalties or such?? All he wants is a signed album for it but the friendly billion dollar interscope won't reply to his emails.

does anyone know about these things??

i was at a J5 concert a lil while ago and at the concert they played the new song: "golden age" and said they were going to make a video for it in a lil while......
well, i was flipping thrue the channels while eating and got to BET (Black Entertainment Television) and i was about to switch channels again when i recognised the rightuous song and, eventhough i was all alone, i screamed "hell yeah!" cause it was them, as they had promised, they got a video for it..... now i will have to pick up the album, copy it and then return it!

j5 in concert=great!

www.okayplayer.com

that site is all you ever need to know about the roots, kweli and common sense and the rest of the crew. it's a good reference site. i go on it just about every 2 days

there you can see the new (fucked up) video of the roots and kweli and common and you get the news about the "other" groups associated with that crew.

worth a look!
