So, I fronted up friday night to see dexter - which i was very excited about given the previous hand full of times i'd seen him i'd walked away at the end of the night with a big grin and sense of amazement as a resulat of what i had just seen. But...

This time was different.

Very different.

He was kinda, well... shite.

Shite tunes. Shite mixing (which really shocked me). A new facination with a mic and talking all over the begining, middle or ends (sometimes all of the above) of tunes.

Now I know everyone is allowed an off night here or there, and I've seen some of the best performances of anyone - ever - from this guy, but is this a trend? Anyone else seen dex play lately, and if so was it hot...or not?

Last time he was over here, I saw him at Fabric where the crowd weren't really into it, so it was hard to judge, and then at Plastic People on a night that Pete Wheels, one of the members here, put on.

There were some technical problems, and Dexter got the arse; before that, it had been fun, but not life-altering.

It was a real shame for Pete, who'd put a lot of effort into the night.

I guess it just didn't feel as though Dexter had moved on at all... still playing the Hendrix opening, a lot of familiar tracks etc. but then it probably wasn't a completely fair representation.

saw him at the espy on good friday closing out the night which saw the Bamboos (local funk band...worth a listen) and Alice Russell and band in the gershwin room. but then also had expansion team sound system in the front bar with the hardcore hip hop.

We wanted some relief from the hip hop beats, but dexter's set was pretty hip hop and dark and lacked the adventurousness and good time vibe. I wasn't so into the guys on that stage so may have played to what the crowd was digging, but many people didn't see it out.

And apparently I saw him at Golden Plains, but have alcohol induced memory failure and cannot report 1st hand what was going on. he did have a bunch of break dancers, and other dancers onstage too, to mixed effect, and apparently played the Cat Power, Eurythmics, Prodigy progression which is fucking unreal no matter how many times I hear it.

Not sure what the go is though. I've seen him do hiphop sets a few times and they don't connect as well with the crowd who I think are usually there to kick up the heels and be a bit blown away
